Editie 2023
Tijdens deze derde editie gaat Fotofestival Eindhoven de confrontatie aan met AI.
Terwijl de wereld wakker schrikt van de voortrazende mogelijkheden op het gebied van Artificial Intelligence (AI), omarmt Fotofestival Eindhoven deze toepassingen en wordt de discussie opgezocht in de verschillende exposities op het terrein van Sectie-C.

Van donderdag 18 mei tot en met zondag 21 mei zijn er verschillende activiteiten voor de bezoekers:

De inrichting
Op het terrein van Fotofestival Eindhoven zijn verschillende locaties ingericht met een geheel eigen karakter.
Elke locatie reflecteert met een mini-expo op een specifieke manier op het algemene thema. Soms puur op techniek, soms juist op het morele aspect van het verhaal.
AI… ? Art without Artist ?
De expositie ?Art without Artist? groeit tijdens het fotofestival.
Bezoekers kunnen zelf een beeld voorstel ingeven in de computer en vervolgens genereert het A.I. programma een afbeelding. De door de computer gegenereerde afbeelding wordt geprint en kan door de bezoekers aan de muur worden gehangen.

The exhibition ?Art without Artist? grows during the photo festival.
Visitors can imagine an image themselves in the computer and then the A.I. program an image.
The computer-generated image is printed and can be hung on the wall by visitors.

Flora Lemmens
As an interdisciplinary artist, Flora’s work explores the philosophical themes of dualism, disconnection, and experiences of depersonalization and derealization, often resulting in work that is alienating, elusive, and unusual. She uses innovative techniques to create immersive and thought-provoking pieces.
Flora's work incorporates digital forms of art, such as photography, 3D, musical composition, and new media, to push the boundaries of immersive art and create impactful experiences for her audience.
Her art is a reminder of the power of perception that shapes our understanding of the world and ourselves, and celebrates the human experience in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
Flora Lemmens is an interdisciplinary artist from Sittard, a small village in the south of the Netherlands. She studies at Maastricht Institute of Arts and is known for her innovative and thought-provoking work.
Flora's work explores the relationship between perception, the mind and reality, aiming to create a sense of disconnection and detachment.
Praised for its emotionally resonant nature, her work has been exhibited in places such as De Meldkamer, Bonnefanten, Liberation Festival Roermond, Musica Sacra Festival, Noorderlicht Photo Festival, Theater aan het Vrijthof and De Domijnen. In 2018 Flora won a CINEKID Media Award for her work.

I hate pigeons
In I HATE PIGEONS reflecteert Jeroen op de vanzelfsprekendheid van het medium fotografie en de kwetsbaarheid van de fotograaf.
Door middel van beeldmanipulatie creëert hij parodieën van iconische beelden en laat hij de ironische kant van de “The Nature of Photography” zien, aangezien die ook imperfect is.
De meest perfecte foto kan nog verpest worden door een duif, een risico wat met de komst van A.I. dreigt te verdwijnen. I HATE PIGEONS is een hommage aan de ‘The happy little accidents’ en ode aan alle iconische foto’s die niet zijn gelukt.
Jeroen Bronckers
Jeroen Bronckers is een fotograaf, filmmaker en collagekunstenaar.
Vanuit een absurdistische bril kijkt hij naar mens en maatschappij;
aan de ene kant als iets wat kapot is en waarvan je de scheuren altijd zal blijven zien en aan de andere kant als een existentiële schoonheid die zich ogenschijnlijk walsend voortbewegen door tijd en ruimte.

Virtual reality steekt steeds vaker de kop op en we kijken hier naar het begin van een ontwikkeling waarvan het einde nog lang niet in zicht is, althans, zo voorspellen technologen en futuristen.
Wat gaat VR ons de komende jaren brengen?
Zal de voorspelling van Kurzweil werkelijkheid worden?
Het is tijd om de realiteit onder ogen te zien en vragen te gaan stellen als;
Welke problemen zal VR voor ons gaan oplossen?
En zeker niet minder belangrijk;
Welke problemen kan het gaan veroorzaken?

Sas Schilten
★ What I see is what you get ★
Sas is een geëangageerde en sociale fotograaf met roots in de DIY punkscene van de jaren ’80, waar zij speelde als bassist in een tourende punkband (Anarcrust).
“We hadden onze eigen kijk op de samenleving en er is eigenlijk maar weinig veranderd sinds toen… Ik heb met de camera een nieuw instrument gevonden om mijzelf te uiten”.
Haar beelden geven de indruk te zijn geënsceneerd, maar haar aanpak is trouw aan de documentaire fotografie. Door het gekozen moment en door gebruik te maken van kadrering en flits lijken de beelden uit een vreemde werkelijkheid te komen. Zij hoopt hiermee haar beelden de stopping power te geven waardoor mensen er bij stil blijven staan en zich afvragen wat ze eigenlijk zien. Ze wil benadrukken dat fotografie een krachtig en manipulatief medium kan zijn, en dat het belangrijk is bewust te zijn van beeldvorming.

Raak me aan
Raak me aan” is een onderzoek naar de sociale functie van de huid, kijkende naar het lichaam van de man. Hoe ervaren wij een aanraking van een ander en hoe communiceren we met ons zintuig tast?
Het project onderzoekt toxische masculiniteit en homo-erotische kunst. In “raak me aan” worden aanrakingen omgezet naar geluid, waardoor tast hoorbaar wordt. De bezoeker wordt uitgenodigd om een onderzoek aan te gaan door het werk te voelen.
In "raak me aan" is kijken met de handjes wat het werk compleet maakt.
Clim Stoopen
Clim Stoopen doet onderzoek naar het doen, denken en zijn van de mens, waarbinnen queerness, seks en het lichaam belangrijke vertrekpunten zijn. Door middel van experimenteel onderzoek, waarbinnen ik me laat inspireren door de biologie, proberen ik de grenzen van fotografie te vervagen en streef ik naar een immersieve ervaring.
Met mijn werk wil ik de toeschouwer aansporen om vanuit een onderzoekende houding bewustzijn te creëren naar ons gebruik van zijn. Is de wereld om ons heen goed zoals die nu is, of moeten we onze ogen blijven openhouden voor de (on)zichtbare problemen rondom de acceptatie van genderfluïditeit in ons alledaags leven?
Graduated 2005 at art school in Utrecht, Diewke always has worked in photography. The last 5 years her work is flourishing and developing in a strong poetic handwriting. Always working on the relation people have with their environment, how do we relate to nature.
Diewke just had a solo at TAC (Eindhoven, Netherlands), published a book; Melting Heart and is researching to deepen the project with other artists in different fields of art.

Diewke also is a mother of a son, he has also been a favorite muse in her series and still is. Now he is growing into puberty and she gives him an opportunity to figure out how to be just yourself.
In her work she also actively works on her bias, really thinking about who, what and why she portrays people and places.

Door alle media-aandacht voor AI-generatoren de laatste tijd, en het festival met het thema Kunst & Technologie, was Willy nieuwsgierig. Kan ze met AI haar, vaak minimalistische en eenvoudige beelden, namaken? Met beperkte tijd, kennis en budget ging ze vanaf haar 'comfortabele' bureau op een virtuele reis om te zien hoe intelligent deze systemen echt zijn. Willy zal enkele afbeeldingen tonen die inderdaad heel anders zijn dan wat we normaal gesproken van de wereld zien.

With all the media attention about AI generators lately and the festival with the theme Art & Technology, Willy was curious if AI could copy her often visually minimal, simplistic work. With limited time, knowledge and budget, from a ‘comfortable’ desk, she went on a virtual journey to see how intelligent these systems really are. Willy will be showing some images much different than we usually see the world indeed.

Het werk van Willy Lamers (1981) ontstaat vaak onderweg. Of ze nu reist door afgelegen gebieden, toeristische bestemmingen of een fietstocht in eigen land maakt, ze wordt aangetrokken door stille momenten en strenge, bijna perfect ogende composities waar vorm, kleur, licht en concept samenkomen. Een gevoel van rust wordt weerspiegeld in de schijnbare eenvoud van haar fotografie. Willy toont ons verrassende details uit de werkelijkheid die anders gemakkelijk onopgemerkt zouden kunnen blijven en hopelijk verschilt van hoe we normaal gesproken de wereld zien.

Whether traveling through remote areas, tourist destinations or going for a bike ride in her own country, Willy Lamers (1981) is attracted to quiet moments and strict, almost perfectly looking compositions where form, color, light and concept come together. A sense of calm is reflected in the seemingly simplicity of her photography. Willy shows us surprising details from reality that might otherwise go unnoticed and hopefully a bit different than we usually see the world.

Art vs Technology klinkt als een strijd. Maar is het dat ook? The Playoneers onderzoeken spelenderwijs of technologie schuurt met kunst, of dat mens en machine elkaar juist veel te bieden hebben.
De techreuzen presenteren kunstmatige intelligentie als een volgende stap in het faciliteren van een efficiënter, rijker en gezonder mensenleven. Critici wijzen op het ontbreken van een moreel kompas, ethische kaders en de aandeelhouderswinst-gedreven motivaties van OpenAI, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon en Meta.
The Playoneers belichten beide kanten van dezelfde realiteit. Met hun verzamelkunstwerk Temporary Autonomous Zone nemen ze AI de maat.

The Playoneers is een kunstenaarscollectief in wisselende bezetting. De kunstenaars reflecteren spelenderwijs op sociaal-maatschappelijke kwesties. De ene keer zijn ze de vertalers van een boodschap, de andere keer de boodschap zelf.

Als AI is getraind om menselijke intelligentie na te bootsen, wat zegt dat dan over onze samenleving?
Discriminatie en vooroordelen zijn geworteld in AI.
AI zit vol vooroordelen en raciale besluitvorming. Het is zorgwekkend dat AI soms in verband wordt gebracht met racisme en zelfs kan worden gebruikt om racisme te versterken. Een alarmerend voorbeeld hiervan is dat krediet kan worden geweigerd op basis van het vermogen van AI om iemands etniciteit af te leiden uit een kleine hoeveelheid informatie.
Ook zijn er AI-tools die bij het zoeken naar een crimineel een zwarte persoon weergeven. AI is niet in staat om een bruine huid als persoon te detecteren, maar wel een persoon met een wit masker op.
Bovendien zijn er gevallen bekend waarbij zwarte mensen verschijnen als je zoekt naar geweld.
De tekst op de afbeeldingen is gebaseerd op gevallen van discriminatie door AI. De portretten zijn niet bestaande mensen gemaakt met een AI-tool.
Charmaine de Heij, heeft een Surinaamse en Nederlandse afkomst. In haar werk vindt ze het cruciaal om de ervaringen van mensen van kleur weer te geven, in tastbare visuele weergaven. Door middel van haar fotografische werk wil ze haar culturele achtergrond representeren, door bijvoorbeeld te werken met het thema kolonialisme.
De ervaringen van mensen van kleuren worden door een breed scala aan onderwerpen besproken: van racisme, tot Black Hair en systemen van onderdrukking.
Haar fotografie is in de vorm van portretten en stillevens. Hiernaast maakt Charmaine ook regelmatig gebruik van archieven. Door middel van collages geeft ze historische foto’s een nieuwe betekenis. Deze methode zet zij ook in om het archief te dekoloniseren.
Chiara Catalini is a Rotterdam-based photographer and designer with a primary interest in exploring the world of "things".
She defines "things" according to writer Remo Bodei as entities to which we attribute emotional and social values, which we care about, making them more than mere functional objects.
Chiara believes that our relationships with things give consistency to our identity, which led her to pursue a Master's degree and gain experience in Product Design and Interior Architecture.

During her work in these fields, she discovered that photography is her primary tool for understanding and interpreting objects.
Through her photography, she captures things in their essence and seeks to explore the cultural and social values they represent, unfolding their individual meaning in people's lives.
Meta Nature
We are exploring the metaworld and its vast connection sets that establish a new language, media, and visual perception field.
The Meta Scapes project breaks with the authoritative reality of classic camera photography to question what reality truly is. The project produces photographs from the gaming world, thematizing it as a metaworld in different contexts.
Here is the theme, Meta Nature, showcases the virtual space's natural characteristics. Scenes are revealing micro-scale details and the nature of the metaworld between real and virtual.
Ozan Yavuz
Ozan Yavuz is a lecturer on Basic and Advanced Digital Photography at the Middle East Technical University, Department of Music and Fine Arts.
He received his Ph.D. in Art from the Yıldız Technical University for research the relation between historical metafiction, photography, migration and autoethnography within his personal history. He works in the area of visual anthropology, gaming photography and personal documentary.
His book titled "Anthropology and Photography: On Method and Representation" was published in Espas Sanat ve Kuram Publishing in 2020.
Yavuz also had two major solo exhibitions; ‘Workers’ in Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in Purdue, Indiana/USA (2016); and ‘Lily and Wild Pear’ in Halka Art Project, Istanbul/TURKEY (2019).
Looking Beyond Dutch Windows
Looking Beyond Dutch Windows” is a study of the secrets hidden beyond the frames of everyday windows. A window frames a snippet of someone’s life, but it also poses the question of what that frame excludes.
With the help of an AI model which she coded and trained herself, the artist aims to explore the infinite possibilities of what could be lurking just beyond our line of sight. The text displayed behind the AI generated images are the prompts which were given to the AI to create the patches which form the complete image.
By peering through these virtual windows, viewers are invited on a journey of discovery, one that challenges them to consider the mysteries of what lies just out of view.
Lena Steinbauer
Lena Steinbauer is an Austrian Artist who studies Crossmedia Design at the ArtEZ University of Arts.
Her practice revolves around storytelling through image-based media.
Through her work, she hopes to tell stories that resonate with the viewer.
Whether it is a candid moment or a carefully staged scene, she is always looking for the emotion that lies beneath the surface and the story that is yet to be told.

These photo's of landscapes, I didn't make them. A man made them, he travelled around the world between 1950 and 1998 in wonder of nature.
Now the slides belong to me, het son donated me this legacy. I want to smell the plants. I want to hear the wind. I want to feel the structures.
Can I make these memories mine if I enter them?
Jasmijn Duterloo
Jasmijn dove into photography after her studies in Commercial Design and completed the Fotoacademie in 2016.
In her work memories, time and identity plays a major part. Why are we the way we are? Are memories and relationships a fact, or just subjectively existing in our heads. She often starts with a gap or a hiccup in the past which triggers her. More and more she reacts intuitively and starts making images. These images aren’t ready until they lived trough the same feelings as her and with her. She'll use paint, ink, pencils and tear paper if necessary.
Almost all of the images are unique, reliving of the experience together is in fact a one-time event.

Miljoenen digitale berichten razen door de lucht, teruggekaatst door satellieten. Antennes zenden en ontvangen onze diepste emoties - hoop, angst, verlangen, liefde - zonder iets te voelen. Digitale signalen van onze dringende menselijke behoeften omringen ons, hoewel we ze niet direct kunnen waarnemen. Gebruiken we een apparaat om onze liefde over te brengen of zijn onze apparaten een indringer in onze relaties, die een echte verbinding verstoren?
Aangemoedigd door mijn eigen verslaving aan het onmiddellijke beloningssysteem van de telefoon, begon ik na te denken over de impact van de digitalisering op mijn leven en mijn geliefden. Meer tijd online betekent minder tijd offline. Heeft dat invloed op mijn fysieke behoeften? Verandert het visuele bombardement de manier waarop ik zie? En hoe zit het met het verlies van contact?
'Alleen' is een filosofisch visueel essay over de impact van digitalisatie op ons dagelijkse leven verteld door collages van analoge beelden.
Henry Blommers
Henri Blommers (Amsterdam) is een autonome beeldmaker die digitale en analoge beelden combineert met andere technieken zoals collage en stikken. Tijdens het ontwikkelen van film grijpt hij in door o.a. botanische of chemische ingrediënten toe te voegen in verschillende fases.
Hij creëert een surreëel toevluchtsoord vol felle kleuren, gebaseerd op hedendaagse maatschappelijk thema's zoals de impact van plastic, verlies aan biodiversiteit, zeespiegelstijging en de digitalisering van ons leven.

Quattro Ogen
Keiko B Goto was born in Nagano, Japan.
Ever since her childhood, she has been immersed in her own reflection, while she devoted herself to music and literature.
She spent her formative years as an editor at a publishing company in Tokyo.
Inspired by many foreign film-makers and artists, she moved to Europe, to attend graduate at Istituto Italiano di Fotografia, a professional photography school in Milan, Italy, located in Superstudio.
Keiko B Goto
As time went on, she shifted to focusing on her artistic vision. In reaction to Covid-19, and she energetically produced the "Crossing Series". These works are based on multiple exposures. She developed her signature technique whereby images overlap, with creative storytelling and cinematic impact. This series is based on her past experiences as an artist and her visions of possible futures for the world we live in.
She has worked and exhibited in Italy and in The Netherlands and earned several award nominations.
Quattro Ogen is a coined name, composed of Italian and Dutch. It means four eyes.

Als je dichtbij komt zullen de spiegels één voor één bewegen om je aan te kijken en te volgen.

Roland Blok
Roland Blok is a maker of contraptions using the arts of Physics, Mathematics, Code, Electronics, 3D Printing, and all inspiring that comes on my path.
Impaired Vision
In the project Impaired Vision Sobel asks how it is to adopt to the daily routines against impaired perception? Werner, Lars, Ines, Liane and Gabriele shows their aid devices with which they are able to navigate and communicate on daily basis.
The project deals with the perception of people who are becoming or were born blind. Some of them have no perception of images, they do precept the environment which is in their range of touch. The devices became an artificial limb for adoption for navigation and for daily routines.
Artist ask the blind person to visualize the map of the city they live in - Karlsruhe. The project consist of portraits, images of the objects & mental maps draw by blind people. The map verbalize the districts the people know, their everyday way as well as the landmarks of the city.
Karolina Sobel
Karolina Sobel (*1987 born in Poland, lives and works in Karlsruhe, DE) graduated from the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe in 2019. She earned a master's degree in urban studies (TU Darmstadt), studied social sciences at EHESS in Paris and visual arts at IUAV in Venice. In 2020 she was a fellow of the Kunststiftung Baden Württemberg.
Currently she is an academic associate for artistic photography. Her interests include modes of representation of social issues such as identity formation, the process of building communities, social exclusion and hierarchies. For her work, she seeks different modes of representation that allow her narrative to expand on the level of multiple discourses.
She uses different media with a documentary approach that blurs the line between fiction and reality. In her practice she treats photography as the tools for visual research.
Als de dag gaat
In de serie ‘Als de dag gaat (2023)’ wordt de mysterieuze sfeer van de schemering gevangen. De schemering is de overgang van dag naar nacht, waarin de wereld van helder rationeel denken plaatsmaakt voor dromerigheid.
Het is een moment waar bewustzijn langzaam overgaat in onderbewustzijn. Met het zachte oplossen van het daglicht, lost ook de helderheid van gedachtes en herinneringen aan de dag op.
In de blauwe gloed van het landschap vervagen de onderwerpen steeds meer. Wat zal er overblijven? En wat wordt achtergelaten?
Janneke Veerman
Janneke Veerman is beeldend kunstenaar die werkt met het medium fotografie. In haar fotografie legt ze verstilde momenten vast of zoomt ze in op onderwerpen die niet direct opvallen.
Door de nadruk te leggen op het stille, gebruikt ze haar fotografie als middel om uit de hectiek van het dagelijkse leven te ontsnappen en op zoek te gaan naar haar eigen vluchtwerelden. In die werelden legt ze poëtische sferen vast welke vaak een innerlijk gevoel weerspiegelen.
Haar werk is een antwoord op de gehaastheid van alledag waarin snelle informatiestromen ons voortdurend toekomen, er een continu streven is naar technologische vooruitgang en er een grote druk is om alsmaar te moeten presteren.
Marcel de Buck
Marcel de Buck legt met zijn fotografie onze menselijkheid als individu vast. Hij portretteert de mensen hoe hij ze ziet in het moment, met al hun rauwe potentie en hun perfecte tekortkomingen. Hij legt ze letterlijk op de gevoelige plaat. Zijn camera is het middel waarmee hij dichter tot zijn onderwerpen komt: de foto is slechts het middel, de menselijkheid en de persoonlijke aandacht zijn het uiteindelijke doel.
In zijn werk speelt Marcel vaak met de grens tussen het persoonlijke en het algemene. Zijn werken zijn vaak fotografische anekdotes van grotere thema’s die iedereen herkent. De balans tussen het navelstaren op persoonlijke kwesties en het plaatsen van deze kwesties binnen een bredere maatschappelijke context is belangrijk. En waar in dit spectrum kun je iemand via de fotografie met je eigen verhaal raken? Als deze balans klopt, is Marcels werk geslaagd.
De kijker herkent zich in het werk en kan zijn eigen ervaringen erop projecteren: het werk maakt emoties los, rakelt herinneringen op of zet ons aan het denken. De relatie die de kijkers met het eindproduct aangaan, en de reacties die het uitlokt, is een onmisbaar element in Marcels werk.
Het portretteren van de mens is slechts één zijde van het werk. Wat de foto’s teweeg brengen bij de mensen die naar ze kijken is ook onlosmakelijk Buckiaans. In de foto’s of projecten van Marcel is het beeld nooit het enige einddoel. Het beeld staat nooit op zichzelf en heeft altijd behoefte aan context. Marcel wil iets overdragen, iets teweeg brengen en interactie uitlokken. Het werk is daarom ook zelden een foto aan de muur, maar eerder een ervaring waartoe de kijker zich verhoudt via een installatie. Het werk leeft pas als het in de wereld is en mensen erover praten, erover denken of er fysiek mee aan de slag gaan. Kortom, Marcels echte artistieke product is wat het werk tijdens de totstandkoming en na de presentatie met de mensen doet.

Converging with the collective knowledge of information available in the phase of digitalization, the strangeness that I encountered in the streets of Dhaka, Bangladesh reveal a techno-centric asylum which is the norm in the late-capital era.
We relish their directness but do not wish to be touched by their haunting quality. It has transformed from the experience and imagination of a digital age rendezvous from the photographic series ‘Wire Formation’.

Sounak Das is captivated by the experimental use of media and technology in art. He intends to analyze the causality of his lived experiences considering spirituality subsumed in the technocentric age, bridging the human, machine and nature relation as an intrinsic entanglement.
His artistic practice navigates around the peripheral of cognitive dissonance and feedback as a methodology to bend a medium of experience from the ordinary to the sublime. By heart he is a story-teller, by mind an inquisitive observer. The creative process involves thinking through making and the amalgamation of multimedia, predominantly using photography, moving images, sound and installation.
SD is currently graduating for a MA in Visual Arts and Post-Contemporary practice at MIVC, Den Bosch, Netherlands. He is an Alumni of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Bangladesh.

In I HATE PIGEONS reflecteert Jeroen op de vanzelfsprekendheid van het medium fotografie en de kwetsbaarheid van de fotograaf.
Door middel van beeldmanipulatie creëert hij parodieën van iconische beelden en laat hij de ironische kant van de “The Nature of Photography” zien, aangezien die ook imperfect is.
De meest perfecte foto kan nog verpest worden door een duif, een risico wat met de komst van A.I. dreigt te verdwijnen. I HATE PIGEONS is een hommage aan de ‘The happy little accidents’ en ode aan alle iconische foto’s die niet zijn gelukt.

★ What I see is what you get ★
Sas is een geëangageerde en sociale fotograaf met roots in de DIY punkscene van de jaren ’80, waar zij speelde als bassist in een tourende punkband (Anarcrust).
“We hadden onze eigen kijk op de samenleving en er is eigenlijk maar weinig veranderd sinds toen… Ik heb met de camera een nieuw instrument gevonden om mijzelf te uiten”.
Haar beelden geven de indruk te zijn geënsceneerd, maar haar aanpak is trouw aan de documentaire fotografie. Door het gekozen moment en door gebruik te maken van kadrering en flits lijken de beelden uit een vreemde werkelijkheid te komen. Zij hoopt hiermee haar beelden de stopping power te geven waardoor mensen er bij stil blijven staan en zich afvragen wat ze eigenlijk zien. Ze wil benadrukken dat fotografie een krachtig en manipulatief medium kan zijn, en dat het belangrijk is bewust te zijn van beeldvorming.

Raak me aan” is een onderzoek naar de sociale functie van de huid, kijkende naar het lichaam van de man. Hoe ervaren wij een aanraking van een ander en hoe communiceren we met ons zintuig tast?
Het project onderzoekt toxische masculiniteit en homo-erotische kunst. In “raak me aan” worden aanrakingen omgezet naar geluid, waardoor tast hoorbaar wordt. De bezoeker wordt uitgenodigd om een onderzoek aan te gaan door het werk te voelen.
In "raak me aan" is kijken met de handjes wat het werk compleet maakt.

Clim Stoopen doet onderzoek naar het doen, denken en zijn van de mens, waarbinnen queerness, seks en het lichaam belangrijke vertrekpunten zijn. Door middel van experimenteel onderzoek, waarbinnen ik me laat inspireren door de biologie, proberen ik de grenzen van fotografie te vervagen en streef ik naar een immersieve ervaring.
Met mijn werk wil ik de toeschouwer aansporen om vanuit een onderzoekende houding bewustzijn te creëren naar ons gebruik van zijn. Is de wereld om ons heen goed zoals die nu is, of moeten we onze ogen blijven openhouden voor de (on)zichtbare problemen rondom de acceptatie van genderfluïditeit in ons alledaags leven?
Graduated 2005 at art school in Utrecht, Diewke always has worked in photography. The last 5 years her work is flourishing and developing in a strong poetic handwriting. Always working on the relation people have with their environment, how do we relate to nature.
Diewke just had a solo at TAC (Eindhoven, Netherlands), published a book; Melting Heart and is researching to deepen the project with other artists in different fields of art.

Marcel de Buck legt met zijn fotografie onze menselijkheid als individu vast. Hij portretteert de mensen hoe hij ze ziet in het moment, met al hun rauwe potentie en hun perfecte tekortkomingen. Hij legt ze letterlijk op de gevoelige plaat. Zijn camera is het middel waarmee hij dichter tot zijn onderwerpen komt: de foto is slechts het middel, de menselijkheid en de persoonlijke aandacht zijn het uiteindelijke doel.
In zijn werk speelt Marcel vaak met de grens tussen het persoonlijke en het algemene. Zijn werken zijn vaak fotografische anekdotes van grotere thema’s die iedereen herkent. De balans tussen het navelstaren op persoonlijke kwesties en het plaatsen van deze kwesties binnen een bredere maatschappelijke context is belangrijk. En waar in dit spectrum kun je iemand via de fotografie met je eigen verhaal raken? Als deze balans klopt, is Marcels werk geslaagd.
De kijker herkent zich in het werk en kan zijn eigen ervaringen erop projecteren: het werk maakt emoties los, rakelt herinneringen op of zet ons aan het denken. De relatie die de kijkers met het eindproduct aangaan, en de reacties die het uitlokt, is een onmisbaar element in Marcels werk.
Het portretteren van de mens is slechts één zijde van het werk. Wat de foto’s teweeg brengen bij de mensen die naar ze kijken is ook onlosmakelijk Buckiaans. Kan ze met AI haar, vaak minimalistische en eenvoudige beelden, namaken? Met beperkte tijd, kennis en budget ging ze vanaf haar 'comfortabele' bureau op een virtuele reis om te zien hoe intelligent deze systemen echt zijn. Willy zal enkele afbeeldingen tonen die inderdaad heel anders zijn dan wat we normaal gesproken van de wereld zien.

With all the media attention about AI generators lately and the festival with the theme Art & Technology, Willy was curious if AI could copy her often visually minimal, simplistic work. With limited time, knowledge and budget, from a ‘comfortable’ desk, she went on a virtual journey to see how intelligent these systems really are. Willy will be showing some images much different than we usually see the world indeed.

Of ze nu reist door afgelegen gebieden, toeristische bestemmingen of een fietstocht in eigen land maakt, ze wordt aangetrokken door stille momenten en strenge, bijna perfect ogende composities waar vorm, kleur, licht en concept samenkomen. Een gevoel van rust wordt weerspiegeld in de schijnbare eenvoud van haar fotografie. Willy toont ons verrassende details uit de werkelijkheid die anders gemakkelijk onopgemerkt zouden kunnen blijven en hopelijk verschilt van hoe we normaal gesproken de wereld zien.

Whether traveling through remote areas, tourist destinations or going for a bike ride in her own country, Willy Lamers (1981) is attracted to quiet moments and strict, almost perfectly looking compositions where form, color, light and concept come together. A sense of calm is reflected in the seemingly simplicity of her photography. Willy shows us surprising details from reality that might otherwise go unnoticed and hopefully a bit different than we usually see the world.
Impaired Vision
In the project Impaired Vision Sobel asks how it is to adopt to the daily routines against impaired perception? Werner, Lars, Ines, Liane and Gabriele shows their aid devices with which they are able to navigate and communicate on daily basis.
The project deals with the perception of people who are becoming or were born blind. Some of them have no perception of images, they do precept the environment which is in their range of touch. The devices became an artificial limb for adoption for navigation and for daily routines.
Artist ask the blind person to visualize the map of the city they live in - Karlsruhe. The project consist of portraits, images of the objects & mental maps draw by blind people. The map verbalize the districts the people know, their everyday way as well as the landmarks of the city.
Karolina Sobel
Karolina Sobel (*1987 born in Poland, lives and works in Karlsruhe, DE) graduated from the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe in 2019. She earned a master's degree in urban studies (TU Darmstadt), studied social sciences at EHESS in Paris and visual arts at IUAV in Venice. In 2020 she was a fellow of the Kunststiftung Baden Württemberg.
Currently she is an academic associate for artistic photography. Her interests include modes of representation of social issues such as identity formation, the process of building communities, social exclusion and hierarchies. For her work, she seeks different modes of representation that allow her narrative to expand on the level of multiple discourses.
She uses different media with a documentary approach that blurs the line between fiction and reality. In her practice she treats photography as the tools for visual research.
Als de dag gaat
In de serie ‘Als de dag gaat (2023)’ wordt de mysterieuze sfeer van de schemering gevangen. De schemering is de overgang van dag naar nacht, waarin de wereld van helder rationeel denken plaatsmaakt voor dromerigheid.
Het is een moment waar bewustzijn langzaam overgaat in onderbewustzijn. Met het zachte oplossen van het daglicht, lost ook de helderheid van gedachtes en herinneringen aan de dag op.
In de blauwe gloed van het landschap vervagen de onderwerpen steeds meer. Wat zal er overblijven? En wat wordt achtergelaten?
Janneke Veerman
Janneke Veerman is beeldend kunstenaar die werkt met het medium fotografie. In haar fotografie legt ze verstilde momenten vast of zoomt ze in op onderwerpen die niet direct opvallen.
Door de nadruk te leggen op het stille, gebruikt ze haar fotografie als middel om uit de hectiek van het dagelijkse leven te ontsnappen en op zoek te gaan naar haar eigen vluchtwerelden. In die werelden legt ze poëtische sferen vast welke vaak een innerlijk gevoel weerspiegelen.
Haar werk is een antwoord op de gehaastheid van alledag waarin snelle informatiestromen ons voortdurend toekomen, er een continu streven is naar technologische vooruitgang en er een grote druk is om alsmaar te moeten presteren.
Charmaine de Heij
Als AI is getraind om menselijke intelligentie na te bootsen, wat zegt dat dan over onze samenleving?
Discriminatie en vooroordelen zijn geworteld in AI.
AI zit vol vooroordelen en raciale besluitvorming. Het is zorgwekkend dat AI soms in verband wordt gebracht met racisme en zelfs kan worden gebruikt om racisme te versterken. Een alarmerend voorbeeld hiervan is dat krediet kan worden geweigerd op basis van het vermogen van AI om iemands etniciteit af te leiden uit een kleine hoeveelheid informatie.
Ook zijn er AI-tools die bij het zoeken naar een crimineel een zwarte persoon weergeven. AI is niet in staat om een bruine huid als persoon te detecteren, maar wel een persoon met een wit masker op.
Bovendien zijn er gevallen bekend waarbij zwarte mensen verschijnen als je zoekt naar geweld.
De tekst op de afbeeldingen is gebaseerd op gevallen van discriminatie door AI. De portretten zijn niet bestaande mensen gemaakt met een AI-tool.
Charmaine de Heij, heeft een Surinaamse en Nederlandse afkomst. In haar werk vindt ze het cruciaal om de ervaringen van mensen van kleur weer te geven, in tastbare visuele weergaven. Door middel van haar fotografische werk wil ze haar culturele achtergrond representeren, door bijvoorbeeld te werken met het thema kolonialisme.
De ervaringen van mensen van kleuren worden door een breed scala aan onderwerpen besproken: van racisme, tot Black Hair en systemen van onderdrukking.
Haar fotografie is in de vorm van portretten en stillevens. Hiernaast maakt Charmaine ook regelmatig gebruik van archieven. Door middel van collages geeft ze historische foto’s een nieuwe betekenis. Deze methode zet zij ook in om het archief te dekoloniseren.
ALLEEN
Miljoenen digitale berichten razen door de lucht, teruggekaatst door satellieten. Antennes zenden en ontvangen onze diepste emoties - hoop, angst, verlangen, liefde - zonder iets te voelen. Digitale signalen van onze dringende menselijke behoeften omringen ons, hoewel we ze niet direct kunnen waarnemen. Gebruiken we een apparaat om onze liefde over te brengen of zijn onze apparaten een indringer in onze relaties, die een echte verbinding verstoren?
Aangemoedigd door mijn eigen verslaving aan het onmiddellijke beloningssysteem van de telefoon, begon ik na te denken over de impact van de digitalisering op mijn leven en mijn geliefden. Meer tijd online betekent minder tijd offline. Heeft dat invloed op mijn fysieke behoeften? Verandert het visuele bombardement de manier waarop ik zie? En hoe zit het met het verlies van contact?
'Alleen' is een filosofisch visueel essay over de impact van digitalisatie op ons dagelijkse leven verteld door collages van analoge beelden.
Henry Blommers
Henri Blommers (Amsterdam) is een autonome beeldmaker die digitale en analoge beelden combineert met andere technieken zoals collage en stikken. Tijdens het ontwikkelen van film grijpt hij in door o.a. botanische of chemische ingrediënten toe te voegen in verschillende fases.
Hij creëert een surreëel toevluchtsoord vol felle kleuren, gebaseerd op hedendaagse maatschappelijk thema's zoals de impact van plastic, verlies aan biodiversiteit, zeespiegelstijging en de digitalisering van ons leven.

Chiara Catalini is a Rotterdam-based photographer and designer with a primary interest in exploring the world of "things".
She defines "things" according to writer Remo Bodei as entities to which we attribute emotional and social values, which we care about, making them more than mere functional objects.
Chiara believes that our relationships with things give consistency to our identity, which led her to pursue a Master's degree and gain experience in Product Design and Interior Architecture.

We are exploring the metaworld and its vast connection sets that establish a new language, media, and visual perception field.
The Meta Scapes project breaks with the authoritative reality of classic camera photography to question what reality truly is. The project produces photographs from the gaming world, thematizing it as a metaworld in different contexts.
Here is the theme, Meta Nature, showcases the virtual space's natural characteristics. Scenes are revealing micro-scale details and the nature of the metaworld between real and virtual.
Ozan Yavuz
Ozan Yavuz is a lecturer on Basic and Advanced Digital Photography at the Middle East Technical University, Department of Music and Fine Arts.
He received his Ph.D. in Art from the Yıldız Technical University for research the relation between historical metafiction, photography, migration and autoethnography within his personal history. He works in the area of visual anthropology, gaming photography and personal documentary.
His book titled "Anthropology and Photography: On Method and Representation" was published in Espas Sanat ve Kuram Publishing in 2020.
Yavuz also had two major solo exhibitions; ‘Workers’ in Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in Purdue, Indiana/USA (2016); and ‘Lily and Wild Pear’ in Halka Art Project, Istanbul/TURKEY (2019).
Looking Beyond Dutch Windows
Looking Beyond Dutch Windows” is a study of the secrets hidden beyond the frames of everyday windows. A window frames a snippet of someone’s life, but it also poses the question of what that frame excludes.
With the help of an AI model which she coded and trained herself, the artist aims to explore the infinite possibilities of what could be lurking just beyond our line of sight. The text displayed behind the AI generated images are the prompts which were given to the AI to create the patches which form the complete image.
By peering through these virtual windows, viewers are invited on a journey of discovery, one that challenges them to consider the mysteries of what lies just out of view.

Keiko B Goto was born in Nagano, Japan.
Ever since her childhood, she has been immersed in her own reflection, while she devoted herself to music and literature.
She spent her formative years as an editor at a publishing company in Tokyo.
Inspired by many foreign film-makers and artists, she moved to Europe, to attend graduate at Istituto Italiano di Fotografia, a professional photography school in Milan, Italy, located in Superstudio.
Keiko B Goto
As time went on, she shifted to focusing on her artistic vision. In reaction to Covid-19, and she energetically produced the "Crossing Series". These works are based on multiple exposures. She developed her signature technique whereby images overlap, with creative storytelling and cinematic impact. This series is based on her past experiences as an artist and her visions of possible futures for the world we live in.
She has worked and exhibited in Italy and in The Netherlands and earned several award nominations.
Quattro Ogen is a coined name, composed of Italian and Dutch. It means four eyes.

Form memory
These photo's of landscapes, I didn't make them. A man made them, he travelled around the world between 1950 and 1998 in wonder of nature.
Now the slides belong to me, het son donated me this legacy. I want to smell the plants. I want to hear the wind. I want to feel the structures.

Jasmijn dove into photography after her studies in Commercial Design and completed the Fotoacademie in 2016.
In her work memories, time and identity plays a major part. Why are we the way we are? Are memories and relationships a fact, or just subjectively existing in our heads. She often starts with a gap or a hiccup in the past which triggers her. More and more she reacts intuitively and starts making images. These images aren’t ready until they lived trough the same feelings as her and with her. She'll use paint, ink, pencils and tear paper if necessary.
Almost all of the images are unique, reliving of the experience together is in fact a one-time event.

The Playoneers is een kunstenaarscollectief in wisselende bezetting. De kunstenaars reflecteren spelenderwijs op sociaal-maatschappelijke kwesties. De ene keer zijn ze de vertalers van een boodschap, de andere keer de boodschap zelf.

Wolken ontsluierd, in dialoog met het fotografisch medium
Op het moment dat je een foto maakt is deze plat. Wordt er tijdens het maken van de foto informatie opgeslagen de we niet kunnen zien?
Hilde Maassen experimenteert op speelse manier met de techniek om te kijken of het mogelijk is verloren informatie te ontmaskeren daarbij ruimte latend voor toevalligheden en imperfectie.
Is het mogelijk de foto weer ruimtelijk te maken en hoe ziet deze er dan uit? Wat is het geluid van de foto?

Hilde Maassen is geboren in Eindhoven. Op elf jarige leeftijd kreeg ze haar eerste camera en op haar veertiende ontdekte ze de magie van fotografie in de doka.
Sindsdien is ze gefascineerd door het fotografische medium en onderzoekt ze de grenzen; wat is fotografie?
